I received some curly yellow birch from a friend recently. It had been sitting in dry storage for several or more years. However, after revealing the wood through jointing and planing the figured areas have grey stain in the fine grain resulting from moisture and humidity (I presume.) over the years.
Is there a way to bleach or remove the grey stain? and or apply a dye to the wood that would mask the grey coloration and enhance the figuring? Your advice and suggestions are appreciated. Thank you in advance. Tom

Oxalic acid available at any pharmacy..
Cheers, Don
stain it black
and that will solve all the problems. oxalic acid will not do it.
that blue-gray is more than likely a mould stain
pharmaceutical grade is always going to cost more. industrial grade is a lot less $ .. I got a 25 lb bag of it 25 years ago and I am still seeling it to people

Oxalic acid is also available in the hardware store. A couple of spoon fulls go a long way - I wouldn't worry about price matching. Not knowing what the stain is exactly - Oxalic acid is where I would start treatment.
