I am having major mental blockage on this project. I’m relatively new to woodworking but heregoes:
I am trying to build a tapered box newel post fora stairway landing. I want it to have 4 sides and taper in from about 10 inch to about 5 at the top on all sides. I thought miter joints would look the best as there would be no rough butt joints. I do have the desire to veneer around the butt joints for the look i want. I cannot figure out how to design and cut the tapers and miters. How do i calculate the angles for the tapers and the miters ( they will be compound miters due to the tapers) and then cut them safely on the table saw??
ANy ideas?

Here's a calculator that will do the arithmetic for you.
