I’d like to build some replacement sectional garage doors and have been able to find numerous sources for garage door hardware. What I haven’t been able to find are any plans or sources of information on actually building the doors. I’ve searched the archives here, done all the different variations on Google searches that I could, and searched amazon.com and a couple of other new and used book sites for any books that contain information on the topic.
This has arisen from several requests to build “carriage house” style garage doors that the homeowners can use with existing tracks and openers for sectional garage doors. There are loads of companies who will build them, but the how-to information has been tough to find (by me, anyway). Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks! Robert

I built several "carriage" style doors years ago. I purchased door panels that were made of MDO and then used polyurethane construction adhesive to adhere a couple of sheets of 3/8" beadboard plywood. Then I trimmed the whole thing in 1 X 6 cedar and cut the whole thing apart after the glue dried.
With all of the additional weight you will need heavier springs to lift the door than the standard springs for say an insulated steel door. You may need to weigh the door in order to get the right size.
I don't know where you are located, but check with a garage door company to see if they have door blanks. The blanks I bought were pre-drilled for hardware so I made some big saw horses and put the doors together with the hardware and then built on top of that.
Not too hard. I had about 10 hours for 2 doors.
