I have been using a 50/50 mix of Minwax oil base polyurethane and mineral spirits. It works great, as far as application goes, but how do you get the gloss finish to look more like satin finish? I tried using satin-finish poly, but it’s too cloudy and the white junk separates out when you thin it out. I can’t get the knack of brushing poly. I need to wipe it on. PLEASE HELP!

After the finish dries thoroughly, rub with the grain using 0000 steel wool until you get the satin sheen you want.
*For a satin finish, try using a gloss finish for two or more coats. Sand lightly and clean between coats. Apply a final coat using a satin finish--do not thin final coat.Using a gloss finish for the build-up coats gives the finish depth and prevents cloudiness.
*Check out "www.americanwoodworker.com/just_finishing/38jf/38just_finishing.htm" for an aticle on rubbing out a satin finish.
*Add whiting (calcium carbonate) or rottenstone to your gloss finish to produce a satin finish, that is what the manufactures do. If it is already applied, use linseed oil and rottenstone or pumice to remove the gloss.Stephen
