Does holly make a good material, My neigbor is cutting down a 100+ year old holly tree, I didnt think much of it until he removed all the lower branches to get to the trunk and I saw all the burls. I thought it may be good for turning at least. Shane

I understand that it is a beautiful white wood that makes great inlays.

I use holly for inlays and it is a somewhat unstable wood ( at least judging from the way it twists as it dries). I have turned small chest pieces with it, and it turns very nicely. Sometimes it has an almost plastic texture.

Holly is a nice wood, indeed! It's used alot for inlays and such. One major problems with holly is drying the wood and keep the blue-gray color at bay. It is my understanding to get the outside shell dried quickly. As in blowing air across it for the first several weeks, assume your RH is reasonable.
Enjoy,
Dale
