I posted this over on Breaktime, too – just to hit the maximum # of experts.
Anyway, just received a new Hitachi M12V2 plunge router (3-1/4 HP) from Amazon today.
Opened it up and started fiddlin’ and discovered the plunge is very sticky: if I press down on the left handle (next to the adjustment mechanism), it plunges down ok, but feels a little raspy. If I press on the right handle (switch side), it won’t even start to plunge- locks right up.
Seems like there’s a misalignment issue. I’ve got all the locks & adjustments loose, and even pulled the base, pulled & switched the springs (they’re different lengths) to no avail.
So, before I send this back, does anyone know of a simple adjustment or fix that doesn’t involve tearing this far enough apart to either void the warrantee or leave me with enough “extra” parts to build a second router?
Thanx
Don

Did you try oiling or greasing the posts that the router motor slides up and down on?
I have a Hitachi T12 plunge router. Occasionally I lube the plunge rods with liquid graphite, the kind used for locks. It seems to work fine but has to be reapplied from time to time.
Don--I have an old TR12 and a M12V (both plunge). You might try applying some hard wax on the posts, buff it well after it dries and see if that corrects.
If that does not work, I would call people you got it from and ask from some technical help, or where you can get technical help (This info. may be in the manual). If this fails you, then I would send it back and get another one.
I have been a user of Hitachi routers for at least 35 years. I have had one problem in all that time, and I suspect I caused it. In my opinion, Hitachi routers are the best for the money. I also own and use an old Craftsman 1 1/2 h.p.; a Bosch 1617 and a Freud plunge. These are good routers and have served me well. But, I prefer the Hitachi over any have owned or tried out.

Since this is brand new, and it's more than just a little sticky - if you push on the switch-side handle it won't budge - I'm sending it back. Already have the return slip from Amazon, and will pack it up tonight to ship tomorrow.
I've had other people encourage me to look at others, especially the Bosch, but for the money the Hitachi still looks good. If I get another dud, though . . .

Don--You are not likely to get another with a problem. The Hitachi is still a good choice. But, I must say I like the Bosch also. I would have no problem choosing a Bosch.
Best Wishes,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have used the Hitachi and it is a fine router. I made the mistake of buying one of the gray routers. After years of using the Makita 3hp, I decided to get one made by another company. Mistake. I'm stuck. Even the fence on the router is oriented the wrong way for pulling the router. If the only problem you have is the post stiffness, I'd get another and press on. Hitachi is a nice router.
I agree with the others; if lubing the guideposts doesn't help, and there is not some other easy fix suggested by the tech people at Hitachi, I would ship it back and get another.
If you bought it locally, I'm sure those folks would be happy to exchange it.
