I am making a piano bench with an overhanging top. The top is supposed to be hinged, but I am having trouble finding a hinge that works.
The legs are 6/4, and the back rails are 4/4. The rails are centered where they join the legs, so they are set back about 1/4″. Additionally, the top overhangs the legs by about 1/2″ (overhangs back rail by about 3/4″).
I think I attached a drawing.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

So what do you want the hinge to do? Is color your issue, or mechanics, or what?
If the issue is mechanics, you might consider a hinge called a flap hinge, or a back flap hinge. It has leaves which are longer than the usual cabinet hinge, so you can put the knuckles at the rear of the top, and still screw the bottom leaf to the apron.
Yeah, I guess I didn't really explain everything clearly.
I'd like the hinge to be as hidden as possible. I've looked at flap type hinges (rule joint hinges, actually), but everything I've seen is kind of flimsy looking. The top is 4/4 maple, and it weighs around 8 pounds. Maybe I'll look at what Lee Valley hardware has.
Hi t ,
There are some concealed box mount scissors type hinges available that have a function that may pivot away as it opens .
They would go against the back rail inside and screw up to the bottom side of the seat .Much like a toy box hinge .
The drop leaf / rule joint type hinge will be harder to use and more visible , you may need to use support brackets to hold it in the upright position .
If the top was made to hinge off a stationary back strip it can also work .
good luck dusty
well duh, use a piano hinge ;)
i crack myself up
Ductape can fix EVERYTHING!!!
