Hello. I have the walnut carcase for a 7 drawer cabinet ready to glue up. I have two questions: 1) Should I glue up the carcase before I begin making and fitting the drawers? My thought is that I should so that I don’t change anything after making the drawers as a result of disassembling the frame for glue up. But I’m not sure.
2) It is held together with overlapping through tenons, plus blind mortise and tenons for the divider rails between the drawers. All of the through tenons are wedged with ebony wedges and the case is holding together firmly as is. But I plan to glue those through tenons anyway and want to know if hide glue is a good choice. Will hide glue work between the ebony wedges and the walnut? If not, what glue would you recommend?
Thanks.

David,
Oh my goodness yes, glue up the carcase first. Get it right and ready making sure your drawer frames are flat and your openings have parallel sides. And definitely glue the case up. Hide glue will work but I find it a bit messy for this kind of work. It is also temperature sensitive so work quickly. I use yellow glue, PVA, for all of my glue-ups. You could also use plastic resin glue and get yourself bunches of more open working time. But again it is temperature sensitive. 70 degrees really your minimum temp.
Make sure you fit your drawer parts tight to your case before making the drawers. You want a good tight fit that you can loosen up to make the drawer work smoothly. Not a loose fit that you have to figure out how to improve. Good luck.

Thanks Gary. I think I will follow your lead and use a PVA like Titebond III with a decent open time. As always, you guys are the place to go for help. Thank you!
