Hey gang.
I’m going to be attempting a lute this summer, so I need to get my hot hide glue setup, well, up.
While I was looking for a hot plate, I spied a mini crockpot which looks like it might fir the bill. I don’t know what temp it can be set to, but the size seems right.
Has anyone tried this (and succeeded!), or is this just a crockpot idea?

May work CK,
About 70C or so. Just hot enough to touch. Just like the food in the slow cooker.

Rival makes an electric tea pot with temperature control. It's a top choice for hide glue users.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
Whatever you buy, heat water to 140 degrees. Put the glue in a glass jar with screw lid. Place the glue and opened jar in the water to get it to temperature. When you need the glue just carry the jar to the project. When you are all done, let the jar cool, screw the lid on and put it in the freezer. The glue will last a long time and your glue pot heater always stays clean because you are only heating water.
I use a small crockpot and a candy thermometer. I replaced the glass lid with a piece of mdf.Bored a hole for the thermometer and cut a notch for a brush.I put water in the pot and glue flakes in a weighted can. The can has about 3/4" of lead poured into the bottom and the cut off lid on top of the lead. The weight keeps the jar from floating in the water. You could just use the crockpot without another container. The can keeps the crockpot clean.

I use a pot with water on a hotplate. Then, I put the glue in a mason jar and heat it up. I use an instant read thermometer to keep the glue 140 - 150...Seems to work well for me.Tom Iovino

I use the same unit to keep my BLO hot.John
That is as simple as it gets. You can't beat it. I have a Rival and I am getting another one soon. Mine is old and has a crack after I dropped it. I glued it with some epoxy and it has worked well for me. I would encourage any one thinking of hot hide to go this route.
On urea: good stuff. Now I just put some of Pat Edwards Old Brown Glue in with the crystal mix and it has a long set up time. Longer than white of yellow stuff.
Frosty,
That is exactly what I use. I got mine on ebay for about $10 shipping included. If anyone is interested do a search on ebay for them. They are for sale all the time.

Hey Guys,
I believe pyrex sells a candy apple dip thing, its one glass pot inside of another.you would put water in the first one. it`s also used for melting karmel and stuff like that.I think it`s called a double boiler just put it on the stove and warm it up to proper temp. don`t let dry out it`ll sure stink the house up and don`t keep adding your glue pearls to the old melted batch, the result is a weaker glue. you want to wash out the pot and start with a fresh batch.

I use an "old" crockpot for hide glue - - checked the water temperature with a meat thermometer and it was about 140 - - works great.
