Hello folks, I am having trouble coming up with a design to house the ash’s of my three dogs. in the last three weeks we have lost two of three 80-100lb best freinds(there all around 14 years old),so we have been expecting it.
first off I was thinking of something like a spice cabinet with drawers and a door which I could carve or inlay some sort of memorial in.I am stumped and after seeing some of the amazinglly creative projects the craftsmen(and woman) on this site have come up with I thought it could’nt hurt to ask.
I am open to any idea ,modern /traditonal ,what ever.
Thanks Dan

Dan,
I don't have any design suggestions: however, I do want to say that I am sorry for your loss. I had to have my 14 year old border collie put down a few weeks ago and I know how badly it hurts. I am sure that some Knotters will respond with some constructive ideas.

nazard ,Thanx yeah it sucks the shop is adifferent place now.I return the sorry take care.

Dan,
Sorry for your loss. You know it's coming but it still hurts. I would suggest a nice box, place the ashes in it at glue up and never saw the lid open.

Thank you that is the idea ,then I can leave them with my daughter who is 16 next month, not much older then them .actually the one that is still with us is hers so that will be even harder on her.though she loves them all! they mean alot to me that is why I want to make this box special.
I don't get stump on design most times ,but this time I am. all I know for sure is I want a hidden drawer so we all can write them a note and add pic's(my daughters idea).if you think of anything please let me know.
Thanks again Dan
Oh almost forgot,I love your personal qoute!!!

To me doors and drawers seem a little 'accessable' for remains. I mean, do you really plan on openning and closing them much? A turned vessel or an elegant box to me is more appropriate. It's a chance for a design that's not user-friendly, per se, but somehow profound. Sorry for your loss, really.
Brian
Thanx for your input , the idea with the drawers is so there would be one for each dog, the door would be locked most of the time .the idea more then anything is to have them together.the two are in vessels now. elegance will be included!
These guys pulled me through a four year cusdity battle/ a stroke and atleast thirteen years of business ups and downs(greedy partners/not so honest clients), as well as being a source of stabilty, and security for my daughter. she wants something different for them and so do I.
Dan
hey dan, sorry to hear about your loss. my border is 14+ years and i know what's in store for me pretty soon(heartbreaking). i have been thinking about this for quite some time,so i have designed several boxes to house her ashes. i have made dozens of nice humidors and would like to incorperate some of the features from them in my final design. i have saved the most wonderful piece of figured cherry and a nice board of curly maple, the rest is still up in the air. i think that when you start to build it will come to you and it will come out perfect. good luck to you, and let us know what you come up with (pics when your done) thanks finicky..
Yeah finicky I know you are right it will come to me mostly because I'm a stuborn so&so just ask the wife. with me it's a 20'' wide piece of quilted maple that is the last of about 12 000 brd I cut and dried many years ago/they loved chewing on the scraps from that one.there is also some jara and some tulip I have kept for something like this.
Very sorry to here about your buddy's condition,my male was sick a very long time and need to be carried in and out for awhile/ He did NOT like that, he went from 125 lb to 95 in no time. I think he's better off now.
Thanx Dan

The first thing that came to mind is a box shaped like a doghouse. Although I've had several dogs and doghouses, but the dogs almost never went inside. Still I might work off this idea.
I'm leary about much humor in the face of grieving, but a fire hydrant shaped box also came to mind.

Cincinnati, Oh No please always humor!with out humor and good old sarcasim I would not survive. I, like you have had many dogs and have built many dog houses that hardly where used. but instead my male dug a tunnel I could climb in about 20'long /damb thing could have calapsed on him,but it was nice and cool. LOL THe really funny thing with fire hydrant shaped box is two are female and he never lifted his leg to pee on things, lazy bugger.

How about a picture of all the dogs, on three corners of the frame sealed boxes in the shape of a fire hydrant, a dog bone, a dog house, and on the fourth a hollowed out heart.

Dan,
You may want to avoid plans that lock you into taking care of the ashes of three dogs. There will almost surely be other dogs in your and your daughter's future. You may say "no" now but we did to when our last one died. Then a border collie(?) puppy about 6 weeks old, all skin and bones, so mangy he had no hair on his rear half showed up in the driveway. That was about 12 years ago. Boots is still going strong and still acting the fool.

Hi Dan,
I sympathize. I lost my eldest cat last year (14 yo) and had her cremated, too. Here is a pic of the box that I built. I used the form of a bed as my inspiration. It also contains her clay imprinted footprint as well as her brother's (who left us a few years ago.) I did glue on the bottom, since I don't plan on it being opened.

Ckenny, thanks for the pic ,I really like the bed idea .it has a nice flow to it ,very nice I am sure your cats would aprove.
I am starting to think along the lines of one box with three compartments, still lost on a shape though.
Dan
I'd say that the dogs will not mind wherever they are if close to their Human that fed and loved them...
