I am delivering a heavy, full-size panel door for a customer who is going to install it in a rock wall between gardens. He wants it dark green. I am proposing to give it several coats of an oil-based stain. Is there anything else I can do to help forstall the forces of nature in destroying my handiwork?

Yes. Use either an exterior urethane clearcoat or a product called Poxycoat II.Exterior Poxycoat comes in only glos so if a flatter finish is needed,I would use urethane. The Poxycoat is guarenteed by the maker ext. for 10 yrs. and the urethane usually has no time guarentee.
*Four coats of a good marine spar varnish.
