I am making a book case using Curly Maple (Caramelized). Everything was fine until I applied a coat of Polyurethane & Varsol mix (50% 50%). After it dried a coat of white dust/crystal appeared on the surface. I sanded the whole book case and applied another coat of Polyurethane (pure). It looked OK except for the corners where the white stuff was still visible. I lightly sanded the project again and wiped the whole thing again with water. Now there is still a very thin white film. Not sure if the next coat of polyurethane will fix the problem….
Help… any suggestions please.
Urgent request this is a Christmas gift for my mother.

Years ago, before I started spraying lacquer I used to have a similar problem, but I only thinned my poly 10 - 20%. After lightly sanding, tacking off & applying 2nd coat full strength, finish was fine. Switching to Naptha for thinning 1st coat eliminated problem. Still use naptha when I have to spray poly (faster drying than varsol).
What kind of polyurethane varnish was it? By brand. I'm thinking there is a problem with the varnish. How old is it, how did you apply it, and was there any stain or dye on the curly maple? What was the temperature in the finishing space.
For that matter what kind of Varsol was it--Exxon Mobil makes it is a wide range of properties, though it is basically maineral spirits or naptha. The varsol should have been just a thinner, and should not participate in the finish so your first coat was essentially pure polyurethane varnish, applied with extra solvent that all evaporated.

How did you apply it? with a paint brush for oil.
Was there any stain or dye on the curly maple? No
What was the temperature in the finishing space. 69 F

Thank you a million for your help to all of you
