I recently made some Adirondack chairs out of Cedar. I put 5 coats of Tung Oil on them before I put them outside. I waited 24 hours between coats. About 1 week after they were outside we had some very heavy rain. After the rain ended I have what appears to be black water spots all over the chairs. It appears as the only way to fix them is to give them a very thorough sanding. Can someone tell me what I have done wrong. As always, thanks for the help.

Are the black spots on the surface, or under the finish?
Pure tung oil, or tung oil finish also known as tung oil varnish, okene, antique oil, etc.?
I think the reason you so far have no suggestions is because, like me, we're still trying to tie down what you have there. My initial thought was that there are mould spots in the timber under the finish, but I'm really not sure. Slainte, RJ.
*The finish is Formby's Tung Oil. I bought it at Home Depot. I do not believe it is pure Tung Oil. I tried to sand the surface a little bit and it does not appear to be coming off. So I am guessing it has somehow gotten through the finish and into the wood if that makes sense.
*It makes sense MTB. I think, perhaps wrongly, that the timber has moulded. If that's the case, you won't like what I say, but stripping and re-finishing with a more weather resistant finish might be a good option. On the other hand, the chairs are outside, and maybe they should just age naturally. And I might still be wrong too, so just put this response in the 'possible' file. Slainte, RJ.
*RJ,Is your "possible" file next to the round one like it is at my shop? Or should I say, the elliptical one? Which, if the semi-radius values are A and B, then of course a close approximation of the circumference would be pi( (3A+3B) - sqrt((A+3B)*(B+3A)) )But I usually sub that out too!Scott
*Is that an approximation Scott? I'd need to do the arithmetic to check the veracity of your formula, so no comment right now. Did you know that your namesake played second row for both the Lions second string team last year, and plays second row for Scotland? His club is Saracens, I think, in London. You're much sharper than you let on in normal conversation, which I already knew. Slainte, RJ.
*RJ,What can I say? Must be because I'm a long lost Scot. My side of the Murrays got booted to the Colonies many years ago for supporting Charles. If I remember, Charles' general was a Lord George Murray. Reflecting on this, I'm not sure if this shows how sharp the Murrays are after all. :)Scott(a long lost Jacobite)
