Has anyone used a thickness planer with a helical cutterhead that has carbide inserts? How well does it plane figured wood?

Planing figured wood is one of the reasons it is being used by the majority of folks along with the difficulties of knife setting by the hobby wodoworkers. If you read other forums you will see the majority of answers and why they like the insert tooling. It's been around for many years for the pros and has recently come down in price for the home woodworker.
