Where can I find reviews of heat guns? Google came up with a lot of consumer comments on individual heat guns, but I’m looking for a comparisons and recommendations.
I need it for softening paint and caulk for removal. This is only the second time in eight years that I’ve needed one, so it doesn’t have to have a lot of settings.
Thanks,
Janet

Think you are asking a bit much. Ace and imports cheap, $26 and when they die, you replace. The better ones aregoing to have a metal housing and cost a lot more, up to $200.
When I was in the same boat I bought a cheap one from the Canadian equivalent of Harbor Freight for less than $20. It only had 2 speeds and was a pretty basic tool with a few scraping attachments, but the warranty covered me for the length of the job, and in fact I still have the tool. Exactly the same tool differently packaged is sold at around $50 by department stores. If you wanted to go to the quality guns a professional might put to prolonged use, the price rises exponentially. For me it wasn't worth it.

Be very carefull about using a heat gun for removing caulking on glass windows. Two reasons. Lead paint fumes being the most serious and uneven heating of the glass and causing it to crack and break.

Janet,
Bruce is right. Unless you are only doing a few lites, the better tool would be a Fein Multimaster.

The Fein Multimaster is one heck of a tool for restorers or remodelers. But $390 for the Top Kit is a little over the top for doing a window ! But it's the kind of excuse I use to get a new tool :-)

Bruce,
Yes, and my line to the little lady is:
...Oh... the new tool I just got...
...Yes, dear, we just can't do the windows without it....
...hee...hee...hee...
Best!

Aren't we devious. I just bought a very nice live center for my lathe and justified it with my wife by selling a handful of pens I turned.

If you only have used one in the last eight years. Don't waste your money on an expensive one. My dad bought one from Sears (Yes, Sears) used it a half dozen times over 20 years. It's still in it's original box.
We use Milwaukee heat guns Model 750 in the shop. They hold up well. The key thing is to cool the gun down after. We always turn off the heating element and let it run with just the fan.
