Need to find a good hardwood company online. I live near Bar Harbor Maine and found that I can buy cherry, oak, poplar and hard maple at Niagara Lumber online at a better price delivered than I can buy it here from local shop. But Niagara is the only one I’ve checked out. I’m not looking for exotics but basic woods like the ones I’ve listed above. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks…english

Go to http://www.woodfinder.com. You can search on kind of wood, or locaton, as well as whether they do mail order.

I've purchased some oak from http://www.woodworkerssource.net and was pleased with both the quality and price. http://www.Internetlumber.com is another site that may be better for you (cheaper shipping) as they are closer N Carolina vs. Arizona.
I have been looking at purchasing from internetlumber.com. Have you purchased from them? I have used woodworkers source with success.
No, I've only used woodworkers source one time, since then I've found local sources of lumber that are more affordable.
I can't help you with internet suppliers, I have many bookmarked, but I haven't dealt with any of them. Maine Coast Lumber makes deliveries to your area on Thursdays. I don't know what you are paying. Yesterday I bought some 6/4 red oak in the rough and it was $3.69/BF. I also got some excellent plain sliced 3/4" red oak ply for $73.28. If you are in the business, Keiver Willard and Holt & Bugbee are two long time suppliers to Maine shops. They make regular deliveries all over the state.

Where's Maine Coast Lumber? Do they have a web site and how 'bout the others? Thanks.
York and South Portland locations, butthey make deliveries running up the coast once a week.http://www.mainecoastlumber.com/
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
Maine Coast has two locations, one in Westbrook and one in York.
http://www.mainecoastlumber.com/Keiver Willard is in Newburyport, MA
http://www.keiver-willard.com/Holt & Bugbee are in Tewksbury, MA
http://www.holtandbugbee.com/There is also Atlantic Hardwoods in Portland
http://www.atlantichardwoods.com/index.htmlThere must be some place in the Bangor area if not closer to you. Plenty of nice work being done in your area. Ask around, Hammond Lumber may be able to order you some things. Red oak and poplar are readily available D4S. In most cases, I like to hand pick my lumber. You should plan a trip to Portland. You could go to Maine Coast and Atlantic and poke around in their stacks. The Rockler in South Portland has a nice selection of exotics, some veneers and some extraordinary burls.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match

So, what makes a lumber dealer "good" for you? Just price?
I know a lot of places that charge a bit (ok, a lot) more but they give me good service.
I buy 200-400bdft lots of wood only 2 times a year. I might order from the same supplier every 2 years but each has a different specie:
1) I get good wood. I ask for clear stock. I get clear stock with no drying defects. The wood is a bit plump as they say. If the wood is domestic, it all comes from the same log.
2) I get good delivery. 1000 miles of shipping gets wood to me in 3 days for about $1/bdft.
3) I get pretty wood. I ask for wood with good figure and that is what I get.
4) I get a reasonable price. I am always happy when wood is under $10/bdft delivered.
I could drive 5 miles and pay half of what I do, but there is more than price.
check with http://www.highlandhardwoods.com in so. NH. You may be close enough for them to deliver. If not it may be worth the trip. They have an excellent inventory and very good prices.
