I am looking for some tips on making a jig with a trim router to trim the overhang from hardwood edging on plywood.

Pat Warner makes a nice base for trim routers for doing what you want. The design isn't original with him, I've seen several shop made versions described over the years. His version is here: http://patwarner.com/vertical_trim_subbase.html
Personally, I would make the extension off the back, the piece with the added knob, much longer, and possibly add some weight there, to counterbalance the router better so there is less chance of the overhanging router tipping and cutting into the plywood.
