Folks,
I moved about a month ago. I have turned the place upside down, but can not find the box that contained:
1) Pre-WWII Bailey #5
2) Two Stanley # 5- post WWII
3) Grand Dad’s #4 smoother
4) 2 or three block planes- one Grand Dad’s
5) Low angle stanley block plane
6) Right and left wooden body sholder planes
None of these were fantastically expensive planes. They were very carefully tuned up and really worked well. I spent alot of time with them. Some had Hock replacement irons. Two were handed down from a friend and two were Grand father’s. I don’t know anyplace around here to go look for replacements. It is kind of heart breaking- we did alot of nice work together.
I was thinking of turning in a claim to the moving company. I have no idea what the street value is on my babies. If I went out and bought a #5 LN and two block planes I’d spend quite a bit (700-850). Any ideas on what to do.
Thanks,
Frank

Check Patrick Leach's Old Tools listings for market values and potential replacements.

Frank, get ready for bad news from the movers if you signed the standard contract. They are only responsible for 50 cents (or some other small value)per pound for the goods proven lost . I would at least use the Bed Rock weights in your claim. This is why I moved all my old hand tools . Paddy
If all your planes were Stanley's in good condition with no broken parts, the street value of them is around $250-350 plus the Hock blades which add $35.00 per blade. Your Grand Dad's planes were priceless.
Sorry about your loss. Hopefully they'll turn up.
Boy, that really just plain sucks! Hope they turn up or someone's conscience overpowers them or something!
Some tools we just use but some we develop a "relationship" with. As you so aptly put it "we did a lot of nice work together".
BUMMER MAN!

Super bummer. Did you contact your realtor to see if the box was left behind ? Worth a try !

Frank,
Are you sure that box ever made it onto the truck? Maybe it's still sitting back at your old place in amongst the new tenant's boxes.
Good luck. Gee wiz, I'd rather lose one of the kids in the move than a box of my favorite planes! (Just kidding)

Chuck,
Are you sure you're really "just kidding"!! Would depend on how many kids one had and if maybe there was a particularly rebellious one. LOL Thanks for that comment, got a good chuckle!

Never Never Never put anything valuable in a movers truck. They are the most thieving bastards on the planet.
I had to put stuff in storage and was staying in an apartment so storing stuff was tough. I kept the most valuable stuff under my thumb.
Sorry for the loss. Maybe they will turn up when you unexpectedly trip over the box one day.As my shop gets expanded, I have already decided that when the time comes to move, I will hire movers for the rest of the house, but I will hire a couple of college kids to help ME move my shop.
