I a fair shock when I’ve got my dust collector hooked up to my planer. It’s a Delta single stage collector. Is there an easy way to ground this thing?

Yes. Run a small copper wire from your duck to the closest plumbing pipe, or to the small center screw that holds an outset plaque (or switch), provided they are grounded correctly, or why not screw it to the steel body (if any) of your planer if it has a 3 prongs plug.

Is is necessary to run the wire inside the duct or not? I have flexible ducting with the spiraling wire in it.
No. You can run the wire outside the duct. The static will jump to it through the duct. See attached naive sketch.

Do not run the wire inside the pipe; been there, done that. The wire tends to catch larger chips around bends resulting in clogs. As was mentioned in another post, use the wire reinforcement as the grounding wire. You will need to put connecting wires from pipe to pipe where they connect to elbows, blast gates etc. You want a continuous circuit from one end of the pipe to the ground point at the collector.
>copper wire . . . your duck.sounds like there could be some animal cruelty issues here . . .: )roc
Professor Roc,
As long as I stay in the 'virtual life', I don't see any cruelty !!! :-)
Okay, it's a D, it's a U, it's a C, it's a T.

>duckMy boss at work, owns the business, is a woman who cares not for wood/furniture but kindly views a pic or example of a joint I bring in for show and tell. She calls dovetails "ducktails" . Her husband is always correcting her. I encourage her. I think it is fun.
You don't have to run the wire on the outside of your duct if the spiral duct is wire re-enforced. Just peel back the duct at the ends and connect any additional wire needed on outer ends to the wire that runs inside with a connector. I have 6" clear spiral ducting on my cyclone and I connect in that manner. I drill a hole in the machine on that end and put a screw in I connect to.
Good luck...
Sarge..
Many thanks. What do you think of your cyclone? I've got the 1 1/2 horse Delta single stage so I only use one 6' hose. Sure would be nice not to have to move it around all the time.
I have the Penn State 3 HP Tempest. I love it but regardless of what you got.. it's going to be a big improvement over just using Shop Vacs. You might want to consider an over-head filtration somewhere down the road when you get into position. It is a tremendous help also.

Sarge..
Ive been trying to figure out what the best overhead filtration unit is the best. Any ideas?
I have a Jet.. but I shopped several and found them all comparable and basically do the same thing. I would look for the best deal which is what I did. I am not sure of the current pricing but.. something might be on sale. And.. check the Steel City web-site as there were double rebates through December 31st I believe.
Good luck...
Sarge..
Thank you. I'll give them a try.
I bought the Delta 50-875 and I'm glad I did since the air is almost free of dust. There's a huge difference.
Surprisingly, I found out that there is more dust on all horizontal surfaces in the workshop since I installed the overhead unit. I believe this is because the unit circulates the air, though the dust, all around the shop.
I've taken the habit to vac the outer filter once a week to help getting peak performance.
As long I as breath less dust, I'm happy.

How is the filter rated? What is the smallest dust it will pick up?
1 micron. For more info, here is the link:

This model has the lowest price on the bag filter which should be changed once in a while - $79.95 CAN. Mine was install in March 2008 and doesn't need to be changed yet. Thanks to the indicator on the side !
Check out the current issue of FWW #201 for a clever way to install it to minimize vibrations.
