Does anyone have any experience with either of these 8″ jointers. They are the same price ($695.00 at grizzly.com). The only differences i see is that the G0656 has a mobile base and 3hp (vs 2hp on the G0586). Seems like a no brainer, you get more hp and a mobile base for the same price with the G0656. Sounds too good to be true. I am just getting started in woodworking (my first jointer) and these find my budget (+/- $750).

I have no idea.. However been in Service related field all my life.. If ANYTHING is cheaper it is for some reason!
Just me, but I would call Grizzly and ASK them! Maybe just trying to get them off inventory? Inventory Taxes are a bummer!
There are differences. Read the specs closely. One has 2,000 Cuts per minute more per minute and the bed is 3" longer at 75 .vs. 72. This is the largest diff I see. Either one will provide you with good service. I bought the 12" in Jan and love it. The 2k more cpm will produce a smother cut, but as to how much, I don't know. This will be more important on figured woods. They are both dovetail design, so no diff there and they both have 4hss knives. Again, I think you will be happy no matter what, it's just what you feel is better. Do you want the 75" or the 72". You gain 1HP and give up 3" on table. You get the mobile base and give up 2k cpm's on the cut. Decisions decisions. Enjoy and have fun. Me I'm facing a corporate relocation and they may not move my beast at 1100 pounds. I've been checking and it may be better to sell the thing and just buy a new one when I get to PA. I hate to lose money on a tool I bought six months ago, but I've been researching a van and cost to get it to Pa from STL and it's adding up. Oh well thats another thread. Take care.
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it.
And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
While more CPM will produce smoother cuts at the same feed rate, the same effect can be produced by feeding stock over the cutterhead more slowly.

spend the extra $100 and get the G0490. I just got mine a couple months ago and love it. Lot more HP than my old 6" and larger diameter cutter allows me to take of more material quicker. Saves on the knives, too. Extra long infeed makes it easier to register long boards.

Higher HP motors normally cost cheaper than lower HP in my country, especially those 3-phase ones. I just don't understand why.
