Grizzly dust collector not as advertised
I went out to Grizzly in Muncy PA yesterday to look at some equipment and while I was there I asked if I could hear the 3 HP cyclone run since I have one scheduled for delivery tomorro and they have one set up in their demo room
well it seems quiet enough, but I was a little taken by its height. I asked the rep if it was the same one as in the catalogue and on the website that is supposed to be 93″ tall. I have just 93 inches in my basement shop
we got out the catalogue and sure enough- same one, but it actually measures 112″
the rep offered to negate the sale and delivery if I could not make it work
after a lot of fiddling around with a tape I’m pretty sure I can set it up without part of the 2 piece chip barrel and positioning the motor between the floor joists above
also the chip barrel is advertised as being a 55 gallon drum. far from it. just guessing its about 30 – 35

Those are some serious flaws! Personally, I would not asccept delivery and make them refund my money or discount the unit for not being what they advertised. You have to vote with your dollar these days - Grizzly is not the only company making cyclones.
By the way - if you went to the showroom why not just pick up the unit and save on the shipping?

Maybe whoever set it up didn't read the instructions and mounted something upside down.

I would refuse delivery and challenge the charge with the credit card company if the manager at the showroom refused to solve the problem.
actually the rep at the showroom offered to terminate the transaction. I said I thought I could make it work.
could'nt ask for more than that
Sorry, Maverick, I missed that sentence when I read your post. I'm glad to hear he was cooperative. Hope everything works out!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I got the thing installed late last night.
their installation manual reads if you are mounting the unit to a wood framed wall then you need to install a 2x10 to the wall then mount the unit to that.
then it says if you mount it to a concrete wall just mark the mounting hole pattern to the wall and install with concrete anchors, which I did
get it all installed and guess what, the chip barrel doesnt line up with the cone. I needed the extra 1 1/2" block out for clearance.
take down, redo - 2 hours
someone is seriously not on the ball over at Grizzly
Anyone remember which forum it is that Grizzly's owner hangs out at??? This (these, actually -- the spec mistake and the installation screwup) would be a good thing to bring to his attention there!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
In all fairness to Grizzly the spec sheet for that machine on page 9 of the manual lists two heights, 93 1/4 and 109 1/4 depending on how many sections are installed on the waste drum.
As far as the installation goes it is not necessary for the waste drum to be exactly centered for it to work properly. I can move my drum several inches in any direction and it does not affect the performance.

Which one do you have and can you share your experience with the machine?
I have the 3 hp cyclone from Penn State Industries with cartridge filters on the output. I have been tickled with it. Reasonably quiet, sucks like crazy and zero problems.

fairness?
the catalogue and the website both list the unit at 93 1/4". the last place to spring the 109 1/4" height on someone should be the installation manual supplied w/the unit
and, if you have a tight ceiling height you will most certainly need to center the barrel with the cone.
I have 93 inches under the floor joists like I said. I headered off the floor joists and got the motor to within 1 inch of the subfloor above. that, and by not installing the castors on the barrel allowed me to use the whole barrel (both parts).
that gave me 4 inches between the cone and the barrel lid. not enough for a 1 1/2" offset

The machine is the advertised height when installed according to the manual. You chose to add the other part of the waste drum which brings it up to 109 1/4.
All of the info is freely available on their website. If my space was already a quarter inch shy of the required height I sure would have looked into it carefully.

I agree completely (and I don't work for Grizzly). The only (minor) thing I'd fault Grizzly with is that the sales guy on the floor did not know that there were two different installation configurations, and that the unit on the floor was assembled in the "Plan B" taller one. The machine fits in the advertised height, so what's the issue?
As was noted, all this information (and more) is available on the Grizzly website. I never buy a tool these days, from anyone, without downloading the manual first. It's part of the research / due diligence process.
Hi, Don. I just looked at the web page for the G0441. They state
Overall dimensions: 60-1/4" wide x 38-3/8" deep x 93 1/4" high
If I were writing that description, I would note the other, taller, height of which you speak. It's sloppy writing (and editing) for the catalog that's causing this aggravation, IMHO.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
It will fit in the specified dimensions with the parts supplied. I will agree that they should have stated on the web page and in the catalog that the shorter configuration would reduce the waste capacity to 35 gallons.
All in all I think it's a pretty minor quibble in a 658 page color catalog they send out for free.
One must still do one's due diligence to ensure it will work in a given application.
There is always the option to pop for the wye and use two 35 gal drums if the capacity is a problem. It's really an insignificant extra expense.
I would be willing to bet the salesman would have thrown those parts in when he was at the showroom. Heck, they might still. He was ready to refund the sale.

So...
how long have you been working for Grizzly?
you buy something on-line according to their written specs then you find out things are "otherwise", thats OK because the catalogue was free?
Did you get some cheese to go with that whine?
I don't own any Grizzly tools nor do I work for them. They offered to refund your money and you told them you could make it work. Obviously you overestimated your skills.
Did you read the full specifications before purchase = no. Did you look at the measured drawing before purchase = no.
When you went to look at the machine in the showroom after you purchased it you had to have seen that you would not be able to use the drum extension. Did you tell the salesman that you wanted to use the 55 gal capacity and not the 35? Did you ask what they could do to make that happen for you? No you said I can make it work. So make it work.
Let me guess, it's going to be their fault when the motor burns up from being shoehorned in too close to the ceiling too.

Dgreen,
I can't begin to remember all the times that I did not do my due diligence in my projects. I seem to get lucky about once in a 100 attempts. Something about building one off designs, where you can't build prototypes (fire elements, water elements) that make life interesting.
I have a son who finds cheese and whine to be part of life. Any chance you need a sanding monkey who needs some common sense? You could be missing out on a chance to change the world.... <grin and fun>

PS I think the grizzley info on line is solid, the owners manuals, assembly instructions are all on line. I read all of those before buying 4 tools from them, and made some calls about the spiral cutters they use. The photos are different from the actual product. <!----><!----><!---->

Hi Morgan,
I barely have enough common sense to get by let alone any to spare!
I've really been impressed with Grizzlys online documentation.
If I ever get rich and famous I'd sure like to get my hands on that 16" horizontal resaw and that 5 horse overarm router and that 18" jump saw and and and.... oops I'm drooling again.
Two earthquakes and freezing fog last night, need a sanding monkey for a month or three? I'm mostly housebroken and I don't eat much!

I've also seen posts from him on WoodNet.
