Grizzly 8″ w/spiral head or Delta 8″ Jointer
Hello, I’m new here and have not done much research, but am interested in your opinion.
locally there are two used Jointers that I am considering; a Grizzly G0490X (spiral head) and Delta DJ-20. Both are 8″ jointers, and are about the same asking price; $1100 & $1000. Which jointer would you reccomend I pursue? I think the asking price is a bit high for both.
Thanks,
Jim

The choice largely depends on the kinds of wood you expect to plane. With really really gnarley figured hardwoods, you might lean toward the spiral head. But for more ordinary hardwoods I would choose the DJ20. The DJ20 is about the best 8" planer outthere, very adjustable and accurate. Spiral heads handly the figure better, but in general do not give as smooth a finish. You will have to do more to eliminate planner marks with the spiral head on ordinary hardwood than with the DJ20. And, Grizzly is more prone for needing to be tweaked for fit and finish issues.
In each case, be sure you understand why they are being sold, and a good straight edge to check that the tables are "parallel" is a good idea. For many the 8" jointer is the sweet spot size, and they don't come to market nearly as often as 6" jointers which are pretty quickly seen as being limited. (That said, I sold my DJ20 and replaced it with a 16" jointer)
