Not sure what to call it – but it is a big old grindstone – looks like cement – about 15″ in diameter. Farmers used to use these things in a hand cranked set up with water trough underneath to keep the stone wet.
Anyway, the question is – does anyone use these anymore? There is one in my late father’s shop and I have been thinking about bringing it home and setting it up. It is just the stone on a shaft so I would need to build the trough etc. I can recall him using it. I assume the advantage is that it is pretty much impossible to overheat the article being sharpened.
Thoughts, input?

Yep, I still use one. It's sandstone. It will work nicely on axes, sharpening the forward edge of shovels and for other rough work. If it is in excellent shape it will work for rough grinding plane irons and chisels that have hit assorted screws and nails. They are fun to have around but take too much time and energy to be used on a regular basis.

bichonben,
I have one too, and I still use it. It can't be beat for removing a lot of steel quickly without the danger of drawing the temper. And it's fun.
