Grinder for sharpening-recommendation?
I was looking for a recommendation for a grinder to dedicate to sharpening. My cheapo grinder is getting bad and has alot of runout in it. I want to get a new one but was looking for some ideas from the sharpening gurus located here at knots.I have a cheap harry-homeowner wet grinder(small delta)that works, but is very slow.

Spike,
I have a cheap (~$50) Delta Shopmaster 6" grinder equipped with a 120-grit white Norton wheel on the left side and a stock gray wheel on the right. I use a Wolverine jig as a guide (I'm a turner too). I use the platform and the white wheel to grind nicks out of chisels and plane irons or to change the bevel or shape, then finish off with manual methods. I kept the gray wheel for the occasional angle iron and mild steel that must be ground. So basically, I use the grinder only for rough shaping, never relying on it to provide a fine edge.

It's not cheap, but the 1/3 HP Baldor grinder with 46 and 60 grit Norton 3X friable wheels is the cat's meow. I got mine from Tools For Working Wood for $369.95. Zero run out and super quiet. A real joy to use.
Check out Joel Moskowitz's great article on grinding in the May/June issue of FWW.

I have the Delta 23-725
8" Slow-Speed Bench Grinder with Pferd wheels and have been happy with it.
