I am buying wood now to build a pair of the Greene and Greene end tables from the August 2004 issue of FWW. I’ve got a few of questions about the construction of the table. First–do you rough out the cloud lifts on the apron rails before cutting the tenons?–the article makes it sound like you don’t do anything to the cloud lifts before cutting the tenons. Second–how much of a concave do you plane in the bread board ends to create the spring joint. I’ve never done this before so I’m curious. Third–I’m planning to use crotch mahogany for the top, and I wonder if I need to make the tenon on the bread board end deeper than the one in the article–will the crotch board move more than the material you used?
Thanks. Tom

Hi Tom,
I always do my shaping after I cut my joints. Do the cloud rise shapes after the tenons are cut so you have straight edges to work from.
The spring joint has a small hollow cut into the long grain of the end, oh about 1/32" or so. There's no formula, just a sense that the amount of concavity that you put in will pull the ends in good and tight when you assemble the top.
As for predicting what wood will do every time, I cannot. I don't think that deeper tenons will make much of a difference for you though. Good luck.
