HI, could you please explain the procedure for grain filling a desk top in american white oak, to be stained then sprayed with lacquer. I would prefer to stain after filling the grain so as to get a uniform colour. thanking you, pomme australia.

When grain filling, it is better to stain first and let it dry well. Next I would seal the surface with a coat of shellac (de-waxed). You can also use whatever sealer you planned on with your lacquer, just thin it about 40 - 50%.
Next comes the grain filler. You can adjust the color of it to match your stain or be a little darker for a nice contrast.
Let the filler dry for at least a few days before proceeding with your sealer and topcoats.
