Sand in rapidly with shellac to fill grain . If you use any other system you will loose depth of grain on the final finish.

2 parts boiled linseed oil, 1 part turpentine, some japan drier, about 1 oz per quart. Apply oil liberally, sprinkle on 0000 pumice and work into the grain. Let dry for a couple of days and then finish.
Or use plaster of paris. Mix plaster according to directions, wipe on surface to fill pores. Let dry, then apply oil mix to make it translucent. Let oil dry, then finish.

Just a thought.. I just made something (not elaborate,, Just a Medium sized jewelry box) out of Rosewood..
On a whim I left the grain open and just used a few coats shellac and wax...
Well, I liked it that way.. Different fer sure but she giggled when she got it! ...
Jack, I think Wop (!) is quite correct-see these pics where I used shellac under precat lacquer- did not go overboard with the filling-only partial.
Sorry, I have just confused Indian Rosewood with PNG Rosewood (Narra)-but maybe the same idea still applies.Philip Marcou

Thank You...
Try epoxy on a small scrap and see what you think. I've been visiting a lot of guitar building sites and have seen epoxy recommended a lot as a grain filler. I think most folks are applying a couple of coats (sanding in-between) with a plastic spreader - something semi-stiff like a credit card. I've seen pics of guitars with some incredible finish jobs where epoxy was used as filler before putting on finish coats.
Waddaya mean it wont fit through the door?
You are all going to think I'm nuts BUT.. OK I am.. BUT I have taken wood scraps (in little chips) and put them in a old blender... Make a powder out of it.. Make a slurry with really thin cut shellac and rub into the wood with that grey 3M? scotch-bright stuff.EDIT:: Or is that green then grey.. I'm old so I forget easy...Let dry a bit.. Use the green 3M stuff to sand and if needed another coat.. Finish off with 400 grit wet/dry automotive paper and dampened with alcohol if some area looks funny.
