I just read an article in which the author says do not use a tung oil product over a grain filler. He didn’t give the why’s and nots, just don’t. This is the first I have heard of this, not to suggest that I am a chemist or some such thing. Can somebody out there enlighten me? Thanx!

What kind of tung oil? Real or one of the faux "Tung Oil Finishes". What did the article say about boiled linseed oil? What kind of filler?
Did the author make exactly that generalized statement? Seems strange. Could you please provide the source of the article and author's name? I'm no chemist either, and rely primarily on Jeff Jewitt for finishing questions, so I reviewed the grain filler information in his book "Great Wood Finishes." Boiling the info down, here it is:
As mentioned above, there's a big difference between tung oil and some of the things labelled "tung oil finishes" which can be mostly varnish, if memory serves. Still, I don't see the problem with either.

I read an article on the net while surfing. The author didn't metion a brand name but he did say boiler linseed oil and tung oil. I was planning to use Waterlox on an oak blanket chest, until I read the article. This is the first I've heard of something like this. Thanx for your response!
Hard to imagine there would be any problem. Waterlox seems to be what I'd call a "wiping varnish," just a little fancier (and probably more reliable) than what I make up here at home. Have fun. Have you checked out the Waterlox web site?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Never thought about checking out their web site. It's a guy thing. Thanx!
Aw, shucks, you're welcome! LOL...forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
