I am new to Northern VA and looking for some ideas for good hardwood suppliers, ideally that have a good selection of plywoods and woods, including s4s. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Northwoods is a big mill and supplier. One of their locations is near Charlottesville. I think they have others in VA also.
Thanks for your info.
If you are in a position to buy freshly milled lumber and store it until dry there are several Amish mills in Southern Maryland along the Charles Co- St Marys Co line. Unfortunately, you can't phone an Amish mill to find out what they currently have in stock.

Hi there,
I just wanted to put in my plug for Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield. Nice people and great looking lumber as well as some specialty items for woodworkers. I haven't been to too many other places that were suggested here (I'm a new-comer to the area too), but Colonial is a place that my grandfather always refered to as "Toy shops for adults". Good luck,
Erich
I'll put my plug in for Northland Forest Products. The main site is near Charlottesville and the have a warehouse in Manassass. They do sell hardwood plywood and will have whatever you need in stock if you call them ahead of time. If you are willing to drive to Richmond then Plywood and Plastics is the place to get anything you want in the way of ply wood. They are located near "the Diamond" incase your in the area. Good luck.
Tom,
Sorry but Plywood and Plastics is out of business. I needed a bunch of sheet goods a couple of months ago and when I called them, their number was disconnected and they had no other listing. Siewers Lumber is now the place in Richmond for sheet goods. A great shop, huge selection of millwork, decent selection of some hardwoods but they specialize in millwork.
Hardwoods I go to the local Woodcraft store and Northland Forest Products near C'ville.
I can vouch for Colonial in Springfield; my brother is a cabinetmaker there.

Thanks for the update on Plywoods and Plastics. I'm going to miss them.
I shop with Plywood and Plastics all the time. They called me today. Seems like they still get stuf from the Richmnd store when I need somethin they don't have here(Roanoke store) I could be wrong but I know they changed the Ph# a while back and may have changed the name of the Corp. If you need to you can call them at..... I'm not sure I am supposed to tell on these chat places(my first chat) anyway I call them at 800-948-7156. They are real nice folks.
Welcome aboard, A.T.
Posting recommendations of good suppliers is wonderful. It's posting ads for your own stuff, or for your employer, or a business that you're a major stockholder in that's frowned of.
tm - here's a list of sources I have on file from a similar discussion. I've only been to Northland - and I didn't see any plywoods.
** Northland Forest Products in Manassas - http://www.northlandforest.com
** LaGrange Resources - near Urbanna, VA - http://www.velvitoil.com/LaGrange.HTML
** Dunlap Woodcraft in Chantilly, just south of Rt. 50
** "The Source" in Manassas
** Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield
** Herbine Hardwoods in Lucketts
** Earth Resources in the Dare section of York County
** Tart lumber at the corner of Rt. 28 and Church Rd. in Sterling

Thanks for your info.
I didn't see anyone else mention Vienna Hardwoods. They are a smaller shop but have always been good to me. I can usually get any hardwood plywood or baltic birch there within a day or two if they don't have it in stock. Their site is: http://www.viennahardwoods.com
I haven't had good luck at Tart Lumber. I pretty much boycott them now. The people in the mill shop are good but at the main counter are rude (at least to a small buyer) and not as knowledgeable.
Welcome to the area.
Rick
Vienna hardwoods is a good place but only a fraction of the size of Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield. Colonial has a huge selection and the staff and machinery there to assist you in anything you need. The owner is usually on the floor helping folks.
Colonial Hardwoods in Springfield has a large selection of different hardwoods and plywoods. Great selections of wood from different parts of the world are available there.

Thanks for your info.
I have used Dunlap on several ocassions and they have been very good to me. Very service oriented. I have gone there to find out they don't have something, ask for it, and the find it for me on their next buying trip. These guys hand pick the lumber they handle and they know wood. The slogan is " Buying wood is like buying chicken. You pay one price for legs and thighs and another for breasts and wings." Great supplier !!!!
