I have a number of old, unused sanding belts (4×24) which come apart at the glue joint when they are used. I’m tempted to try to reglue them since there is a lap joint. Have any of you tried this? Any hints? Type of glue?

Maybe try rubber cement with heat and pressure. Heat from an iron(not too much) and clamp or use a J- roller.
I've done that using contact cement on both pieces then clamping between two narrow boards. Just make sure the ends are alligned right.
Exposure to humidity will cause some sanding belt glues to fail. I keep my belts stored in plastic bags and inside the cardboard box (after learning the hard way).
