I’m in the process of restoring a Lane cedar chest probably made in the 1940’s. It has been exposed to a great deal of moisture. The bottom of the chest is presently many pieces of 5/8 red cedar with a cedar veneer on the inside of the chest and poplar veneer on the outside of the bottom. The cedar bottom and veneers have been damaged by years of exposure to moisture. When I make a new bottom, what’s the best glue to use to join a resinous wood like cedar?
Also, much of the veneer on the outside of the chest is loose and will need to be reglued. I assume the veneer was originally applied with hide glue. If that’s the case, will I have to use hide glue to reattach the loose pieces or will white or yellow glue work just as well?
Thanks!
Dan

I have made several cedar kayak paddles that were made by edge-gluing three (relatively skinny) boards. In short, it's pretty much the same application as gluing cedar boards to make a panel, except the moisture exposure is more severe, as are the wracking forces.
I use gorilla glue for these glue-ups with no special prep (other than jointing and wetting the edges, of course) and have never had a hint of a failure of the glue joints.
This has worked for both Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar.

Mike, thanks for the info. I'm not a big fan of gorilla glue, but if it works on cedar then I guess that's what I'll use.
Thanks again for your response.

dr,
You can use white or yellow glue on eastern red cedar. I've glued up many a drawer bottom and blanket chest bottom with titebond.
I'd avoid the gorilla glue for this job. Can't imagine many things more messy than repairing veneer with gorilla glue. You can, probably should, use hide glue for the veneer repair if that's what was used originally. If water resistance is an issue, I'd use titebond III.

Ray,
Thanks, that's what I wanted to hear. I too have used white and yellow glue on small cedar repairs (after cleaning the areas to be joined with lacquer thinner) but never an area as large as what I'm confronted with here.

Cedar chests have been around a whole lot longer than Gorilla glue, surely it (and its attendant messiness) isn't necessary to complete your restoration project.
Forestgirl,
Thanks to you (and Ray) I can forget the gorilla glue!
I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
