I am sure there is a term for using a flame to color wood but I have no idea what it is. Is there such a term?
The Mrs asked if I could make a board for her to do some crafts on. Sounded like an easy enough request especially since its going to be riddled with pin and small nail holes over time and fine quality isn’t an issue.
Then she added on that she would like every other slat to be darkened with a flame. My first response was how about just staining instead? Nope, I like how burnt wood looks. Ok, fine.
So here is my question:
Coloring the grain with a light fast moving flame is no big deal but what I am wondering is how will that affect glue up? Just the top side that will be seen will be darkened but will a good bond be possible near the edges?
Thank you,
David

Your simplest solution would be to leave the boards that will be flamed a bit oversized, then pass the surfaces to be glued over the jointer to remove any surface char on the edge. (Only a pass or two should be needed.) The small amount of char that would penetrate right at the surface would be completely insignificant.
Excellent idea.Thank you Steve :-)
