Hi
Im building a high back chair with a curved back that is laminated with wood resawed on the bandsaw in Oak. My question is i hear that its recomended to use a resin glue like titebond type 1 but ive always known that type 2 is stronger, ive also heard to use urea formaldhyde but i dont really want to use something toxic, could you recomend the proper glue to use…..Thankyou ….. The recommendation isn't to use glues like Titebond I vs. II or III, all of which, along with white glue are PVA or polyvinyl acetate glues. There short coming as a class is that they can creep. In bent laminations that can be a problem.
The most usual alternative recommended is plastic resin glue, which is urea formaldahyde, I suppose there are potential toxicity issues, though I have seen various views expressed on this. In any event, the miniscule amount remaining in a glue line has been effectively encapsulated out of harms way by the wood. I wouldn't be personally concerned about using this in a childs chair for a grandchild, had I one.
Another alternative, also without creep, and undoubtedly non-toxic, is hide glue. Even liquid hide glue is strong enough, virtually the same as the others, all stronger than the wood. Hot hide glue is even stronger.

I use Weldwood? urea formaldhyde plastic resin glue on occasion. I'm still alive and been using it for many years.
Maybe I got good Jeans? :>)
