I would like to apply verticle grain veneer to the end rails of a table and have two questions. What type of glue should I use, and is there a Canadian supplier? And, can I get away with a solid wood rail, or should I use hardwood plywood ( Baltic Birch) for the rail? The rail will be about 20″ long and 4″ to 5″ high.
Thanks in advance, Algonquin.

I am not an expert on veneering but have done a fair amount. If you use plywood , the grain should run up and down. If the veneer's grain runs in the same direction as the substrate you may get wrinkles in the veneer. You could use mdf for the rail and veneer that. Solid wood may expand and contract ruining your veneer .Personally i would use mdf with either hot hide glue or yellow glue. You can veneer with yellow glue by coating the rail and the veneer with a thin coat of glue. Let it dry , then iron on with a household iron or a heat gun and j-roller. I have good success with heat gun on smaller veneer projects.
