Hello all, I am new to this forum, but have been an interested woodworker for many years. What I lack is confidence and wood knowledge.
I am seeting my shop up in my one car garage and I currently have an ulgy overhead garage door which must go. I was thinking of building my own garage door, (like opening barn doors) which would eliminate the overhead track and free up some headroom in the shop. I want to paint these doors to match my siding but wasn’t sure what to use? Any suggestions? Should I be worried about warping or splitting if I properly paint them?
Thanks

I built these barn door on my workshop. The opening is 7'x7'. For each door, I built a 2x4 frame with a middle brace and two diagonal braces. I sheathed each side with 3/8" plywood and built a 1x4 frame around the outside for decoration. I also grooved the plywood facing out for decoration. The 2x4 frame is probably overkill, but I wanted to insulate the doors well. Including the frame, the doors are an impressive 5-1/2" thick. It's finished with a solid stain.
Regarding your situation, you can use the same paint you used on your siding. Warping and splitting has more to do with the quality and moisture content of lumber as well as the constrution method than the finish. Removing the overhead door also gives you more ceiling space where you can mount lighting where it would otherwise be covered when the door is open. You will likely find the ceiling-mount plug usefull. Consider a retractable cord reel like this one http://www.drillspot.com/pimages/47/4714_300.jpg. Don't skimp on door hardware. Pick heavy duty hinges and locks. I secured the left door to the header with a cane bolt (gate hardware). Securing it to the ground would have been even better. I secured the right door to the left with a pair of deadbolts.

Thank you for your input. Your doors look just like what I am looking for. I was thinking perhaps using MDO plywood with wood trim on the outside and inside. Thanks, you have given me some confidence.
