OK, I have dropped my very nice marking knife on Concrete Garage Floor and bent the tip again….. GRRR. I need a surface that does not Wrek chisels, planes, hardware, marking guages and anything else that I seem to knock off.
I need to park a car inside, my other half seems to think that is important. So I can’t put sleepers down and put plywood on it. I could put 3/4 ply directly on the concrete, easy enough to do drilling and running concrete screws.
Any new ideas out there for material. Any mats you can drive on? Any full roll out sheet material somewhat like linoleum? Would love to hear back.

Take a look at http://www.garagefloor.com/. The mats are cheaper, but aren't quite as tough. The tiles are very tough, but expensive (around $2-4/sq ft). If you go with the tiles, you can use a combination of grid tiles for where the car's tires run, and solid tiles elsewhere. That way, the grit and other nasty stuff from the car doesn't sit up on top, where it always manages to magically find its way up onto a work surface and embedded into your nice piece of lumber.

Thanks Steve, looks like a great possiblity. By chance have you used this stuff and dropped a chisel on it. Does it sweep well, looks like it does. Pictures are great and so are sales pitches, but does it work? Would hate to put it down and do one of my patented DOHS.
Nice thing in Phoenix, we dont have much mud, wet, or dirt on our floors to worry about. OK it rains it once every 3 months.... a 6" rain here is a rain drop 6" apart ;>)

I've used something like the roll-out stuff, but somewhat thicker (industrial strength). It was in a machine shop, so I haven't dropped a chisel on it, but I've dropped plenty of end mills, drill bits, etc., and it works well. It's firm but resilient.
I've gotten samples of the tiles, and they're significantly harder. The likelihood of damage is certainly going to be less than with concrete, but a chisel might not survive a four-foot drop fully intact. I would guess that it's more or less equivalent to falling onto a hardwood floor.
-Steve
I will ask for some samples myself and do a test with my new 3 Cherries... OK with my dads old junk chisel with a resharpened edge.
If you had a choice Steve, would you do a plywood floor and paint or do the new tile systems?
AZMO
By the way, I bought my own flakes, made my own recipe and have had a successful time the Shellac business. Kind of between the two extremes here on Knots, not as thick as some and not as thin as others! Flat finish, sands great and I think the Zinser stuff is shizer compared to making your own dewaxed. <!----><!----><!---->

Ideal would be end-grain wood blocks (preferably maple). I've been in machine shops with floors like that, and they both hold up very well and are kind to tools.
Otherwise, if cars were not part of the picture, I'd go for a plywood floor. If I had to accommodate cars, I'd go with the tiles.

you can get pig rolls of PVC flooring that you just roll out onto the floor, good for cars and tools. look at HD.com and search garage or garage floor coverings
there's no need to reinvent the wrench
Andy, good to here from you again. I do like your projects and you are light years ahead of my work at your age.
Checked out your link and i seem to come up the same company as Steve does, different name but the same product with different OEM. Am I missing something? If so can you post the link to what you see?

i Use large rubber floor tiles and a woodcraft anti-fatigue mat in front of the bench got the mats at sams club. chisels and everything else bounce on contact. saved my sanity!!!
Azmo, do you happen to have a Costco over there? Ours has garage floor rolls this time of year, Rhino-something I think? Looks very cool, I've been tempted myself.
Yep, I am a card carrying member... You never know what is in the stores when you get there. They always seem to buy a bunch and then never restock it again. I will be going by one of them in search of some grape extract tomorrow. Rhino? Worth a question or two.
I begin to wonder if I am the only KLUTZ on KNOTS. Everytime I move a board around I wipe the bench off. Tools, papers, measuring tape, pencils, squares you name goes off the edge. Next bench will have to incorporate an understory bench to catch what comes off the top bench, or I going to build miniature furniture... ;>)

Azmo, I took the drastic step of laying down a bunch of those black mats that fit together like a jig-saw puzzle, another Costco find. But with this mobile base fever I'm experiencing, they'll probably disappear in large part. Super-comfy though.
This is the 2nd year I've seen the Rhino-whatever at Costco, so it may become a regular seasonal item. Hmmmm, Googling.....found Rhino Home Pro, but their stuff looks different. Well, check the end-caps around the tool or janitorial areas, see what you can find!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
My shop is mobile also.. so it has to be able to support the move of a 15" planer and my TS around so while soft stuff can move to the area, but it won't work for the rolling base.
I hope the end aisles are close to the Bordeaux isle..... Stores are just to big!

http://www.griotsgarage.com sells it. Other places do, too.
The very best remedy is NOT to drop the knife and the least expensive in the long run!
I already feel like a captial Klutz, and... and... you just want to reinforce the idea. You you you know this will take a team of therapists the rest of my life to cure me. I I I I may may never be the same same same.....

OK, so if you need REALLY need to go to extremes.. Tie a string to the handle of the tool and attach the other end of the string to a belt loop. BE SURE the string is NOT so long as the tool will hit the floor!
By thw way a rubber mat is NICE to the feet!

You know I think I'll get me a bunch of them body piercings and put rings in all of em, Some nice sturdy rings. Then I could tie me some strings through the each one. Never mind reaching up for the pencil behind my ear, I'll reach for my nose ring to get the 3/4" chisel, the left ear for the marking knife, the adams apple ring for the block plane. I would be the TOOL MAN..... A walkin talkin never dropin mighty TOOL MAN. You can hear me a mile away clanging and a jangling.
You got an idea WillGeorge, you got an idea. It all works fine until I turn on the Lath......

AZMO,
Then you could be a famous TV personality!
AZMO THE TOOLMAN, Woodworkings finest. Invent a high powered electronic device that prevents sharp tools from falling so they float in the air when dropped.
I took a simpler approach; I coated the floor with 2" of silly putty, now they just bounce back up in the air. If I miss them they just keep bouncing. :-)

Geeeee... I was just going along with your problem! No hate here!
WG,
None taken and none given. I am known to have a warped and vivid imagination, and sometimes I get these crazy visuals of the obsurd. I just ran with your idea and took it to the extreme and meant you no ill will at all. Just me getting weird, seeing all the strings hanging around. You see I drop more things than I hang onto, (not really but it seems that way) and so I would like a spagettii factory worker, or can you see me dressed as a grey hair punker with all the rings and stuff rattling around? OK sorry, here I go again..... anyway and then I get next to the lath and... well I think Ouch doesn't begin to cover that. If I sign my post Yur Fren, you know I mean that.

I do that ALL the time! I took NO offence! Just pokin' ya in the ribs a bit........
Just a old man here.. Life is to short to get upset about almost anything!
Try VCT tile. It's $0.50 per foot and easy to work with and lays over concrete perfectly. Its available at any homecenter store. I'm told that the navy puts this stuff down on the floors throughout their ships. You'll also find it in lots of schools, gyms, etc. I have VCT floors over 15 yrs old that still look great. A dropped chisel will nick the floor, but not the blade.
The good old vinyl tile stuff. That should work nice and you are right it is cheap. I was Home Repo today, and saw some roll out vinyl flooring that looks like wood floor, 2.25 per ft but the tile is a better idea, nice neutral and keep the reflective light up. Thanks Scag.
