I didn't think so at first, especially since I have all the old issues of the mag.
But I relented, and now I think it is a great convenience. Rather than spend an hour combing thru old mags from 20 years ago to find some article I vaguely remember, I can have it up on the screen in minutes.
Usually, that is. I think they should still spend more time to perfect the search function.

I think it's well worth it, despite the cumbersome nature of the search engine (which is reported to be under an overhaul). I have saved a number of PDF files and watched several videos, some more than once even!
forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I've bought FWW magazine since 1990, and I've subscribed for nearly 12 years. The website is a bargain, IMO. You get the article archives, video instruction and demonstrations, etc. Well worth the money. Tom
I've been on the fence as to whether join or not myself. If it were an "introductory special price" at half-price for the first year, I'd probably not think twice. Maybe FWW will come up with a special offer combining this site, plus the mags at a really special price!
I assume you know that if you subscribe to the mag, the online service is available cheap -- $15/yr, I think.********************************************************

It is only ~$15/yr as a subscriber. All you need is your number above your name on the address labe. You can call FWW if you can't find your covers.
Yabbut, if I remember correctly, the yearly subscription price of FWW is fairly steep, as compared to some of the competing woodworking mags, such as Popular Woodworking.
I do not want to get into a discussion of this mag versus that mag, as each has its positives and each its negatives. Personally I find FWW a bit expensive. Would I subscribe to their mag at the present cost with a free one year subscription to FWW.com? Most definitely!
Tony,
FWW is expensive. Reading up on the history of the magazine explains that it was originally that way because they had fewer advertisements and appealed to a narrower base (i.e. pros vs. hobbyists).
I don't know how much that still holds true, but what I do know is that when I first started woodworking my favorite magazine was Wood because it explained things better and had more project plans. When I read FWW for the first time I remember thinking... "This is over my head". Well it only took a couple of years before I was bored with all of the woodworking mags except FWW. How many times can you read a "Build A Country Hutch In A Weekend" article. It's kind of like this forum, I used to frequent the Wood forum, but now I only go to the finishing forum there.
I'm not trying to sound elitist but on this forum you get opinions from guys who do amazing work and make a living at it. There are some of those at other forums but the level of skill here is unmatched.

Silly question...If one thinks that the small amount of money to subscribe to this website is not worth it it is because the website is not in brail.
aside from the mass ammounts of information at the click of a button, there are professionals here who help you through the bad times.

Rick,
Well worth the price- pay the money AND JOIN! I paid around $35 a year- the only thing I regret is not joining sooner.

Mag. subscription @ 3 yr. $84 ($28/yr.) + $15 FWW.com = $43/yr. - priceless!
Just having access to all you folks in here is worth twice the price. Hell you folks save me far more than that, except when it comes to tools, of course
:-) :-)
P.S. Not to mention the entertainment value!

A Woodworkers mind should be the sharpest tool in the shop!
I hope that you and others know that access to Knots and the other Taunton forums does not require a subscription to either the mag or the online service.********************************************************

Yes I did know that as my post reflects the membership cost. Thanks for pointing that out. What's also nice is that once subscribed, either way, you have access to all Taunton forums, I think.
My wife and I especially enjoys the Fine Gardening info. too as well as Fine Homebuilding.

It's the best bargain in woodworking.

Measure your output in smiles per board foot.
I vote "It's a bargain." Even at minimum wage it only needs to save you a couple of hours per year to pay for the membership. Seeing someone perform a task in a video can save me a lot of time from figuring everything out on my own.
Also, it's worth the price to me when I can just read what I'm looking for, without a reminder that I'll first have to join.
Worth every penny IMHO...

Worth it! In some cases it is... gasp... *better* than the magazine! In addition to the search feature which several have noted as being valueable, some of the features are much richer.
For instance the recent piece about a guy who set up a shop in an old sawmill. In the magazine there was a photo and a few paragraphs of text. Online there was a photo slideshow with audio commentary from the woodworker himself! I realy like the slideshows and videos a lot (hint, hint, FWW!) I think the future of print media is cloudy at best. FWW is wise to start moving online now.
