green tint?
Hi, I just bought a stock set for my Winchester M1 from reese surplus that’s really nice french walnut, but it has a green tint to it that I can’t get rid of, even with the gale lock company stain with the red in it. Other than the green tint, it looks like American walnut. I want to get to a reddish brown color, no success so far. Any ideas?

Well... referring to my handy dandy DuPont color wheel I note that red neutralizes green since they are on opposite sides of the color wheel. Perhaps getting ahold of a custom aftermarket wipe stain that's redder than the stain you have will leave you with a net redder look. I'm just going on pure theory here since I can't see the wood or the stain you have... but, it sounds like what's happening is that the red in your wipe stain isn't enough to neutralize the green tones in the wood. If that's the case... amping up the amount of red in your stain should leave you with a net redder look than what you've acheived thus far. Adding some yellow should bump you towards the brown color range.
Good luck!

excellent, that sounds like it would do the trick. thank you very much.
Y'know... I hadn't thought to ask more about this stock set you bought. Is it a blank slab of wood? An already shaped stock? I ask because paint stripper can leave the stripped wood with a green tinge. If it had a finish on it previously which has subsequently been stripped... maybe bleaching the wood would be a better solution to your problem.

to see the stock set, go here and look at #s 3, 4, and 5.

It did not have a finish on it.

That might be the French "Yellow" seeping thru to the surface of the walnut. Sure you want to put that on a weapon? ;-)
