Whenever I had to fill holes in my projects I would mix sawdust of the same wood with either shellac or varnish into a putty, ensuring there would be no discernable difference when finishing.
I forgot whether I should be using varnish or shellac.
Any one remember?

eather will work.
general note, use what ever finish (as the bonding meteral ) you plan to use as your finish. Thats if your are useing sawdust as the filler.
Theres always more than one way to skin a cat.
I suggest trying many different methods, like cutting plugs, or ready made products like duro wood. and find out what works best for your project.
Good luck.

Thanks.
I agree there are many ways to skin a cat. The particular beauty of using sawdust is there's no question about how the finish will affect the patch differently than the base material
Hi Curtis-Pretty new to the shop..does the varnish wood dust sink? needing a second application? I have used just plain old ylw wood glue and saw dust as an inlay material. works and looks good but takes a couple applications. Whats your favorite commercial filler? Thx, Brian
