I installed 8 ft., 4 lamp T-8 fixtures in my shop a few years ago. I’ve felt from the beginning that I actually have too much light so this morning I removed 2 lamps from each fixture so basically I now have single tube runs instead of a doubles.
I like the light level a lot better and now I’m wondering if this will save on the electric bill as well. Seems like it would but does the fixture know there are two tubes missing?

Depending on bulb and ballast types you'll save between 64 - 80 watts per tube. The rest is simple (# tubes removed x 64w x hours of use per month)/1000 = kilowatt hours or kWH. Multiply that by the kWH rate on your power bill to find your savings.

We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.

If your fixture has 2 ballasts, disconnect the power to the ballast that you are not using. It will save a few more pennies & may save the ballast for when you need a spare.
