Does anyone know where I could get come flame/curly birch? I just need a couple of small pieces to make knife handles. 2 inches by 2 inches by about 8 inches long for a knife handle? Or maybe just a short piece of an 8/4 board?
I found a couple of places on the internet that sell large boards (8 to 10 feet long), but so far can’t find anyone willing to send just some smaller pieces.

If you're willing to use something other than flame-grain birch, you might look at Packard Woodworks.
They sell smaller sized pieces of exotics for turners.

Regards,
A buddy and I used flame birch from Timeless Timber to build some casework for a small museum. It's beautiful wood. It's recovered from the bottom of Lake Superior, so it is the old growth lumber of which a certain percentage sunk during the original logging of the area. We actually toured the mill in Ashland, Wisconsin. It's very expensive, but you should be able to find some small pieces for what you want to build. I have a few scraps left over of 4/4 stock that I'm saving for some special project down the road. It's very tight grained, and hard as a rock. The flame in it is amazing. I think their web page is http://www.timelesstimber.com. It would be worth making something out of it just to see how beautiful that old growth wood is. Good luck.
holler,
Where are you located and how much are you looking for? I have about 50 b/f that I trucked across the country with me. I'm going to make a shelf for someone, but might have some left over. Maybe a trade? What do you think?

I live in Montana (zip 59715).
So, do you have some 8/4 flame birch? I just want one small length of board (maybe 8 inches long and 6 or 8 inches wide?). Enough to make 2 or 3 knife handles. Let me know what you have, and maybe we can work something out. I don't know what I have to trade, but maybe there's something, or I could just pay you for it.
Thanks.

Holly,
I do have the size you need. Drop me a line, [email protected] and we'll figure something out. I had originally bought it to make a table but that fell through. I was just going to resaw it up. Let's talk, I think I can help you out. If I didn't mention it before, I live in PA.
