I need to design and make a white oak display case for a memorial flag that was given to my wife after the burial of her father, a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. Are there things I should incorporate into the box to help preserve the flag, or am I thinking too much again? Thanks.

Woods in general are acidic, oak especially so. Coating the inside of the case with shellac should provide enough of a barrier to prevent accelerated deterioration of the fabric in the flag.

Thanks, Steve. I'm a late-comer to the many uses for shellac, but find that it comes up more and more lately. Do you use it on the inside of drawers, too?
I use it on the insides of everything, and frequently on the outsides, too. ;-)

I've made about six of these. The Black Walnut were my favorite, followed by Cherry then Oak. I glued 1/4" hard foam poster board covered with red felt or velvet inside to the back board. That way you can easily pin campaign and service medals to it.
