I’m finishing off a cabinet project made out of Hard Maple and Maple veneered plywood. I’m considering using both a Shellac and General’s Seal-a-Coat oil/varnish finish to finish off the job. My goal with the finishes is primarily the look and feel of the finish and NOT the protection.
My questions: Does it make sense to use both? Does the Shellac accomplish something that the oil/varnish doesn’t and, if I’m to use both finishes, does it make a difference which goes on first?
Thanks for your help.

rabbi,
Either finish can be used by themselves or in conjunction with one another.
If you were to use both, the shellac would be your first coat which will act as a sealer. When dry, you would sand this lightly with 220 or 320 paper as needed to smooth the surface prior to the varnish.
Shellac alone will give you a finish that dries quickly and adds a beautiful glow to the surface. In many instances it's all you need.
Have fun.
