I built a solid Vertical Grain Douglas Fir exterior entry door in June of 2000. The builder finished it with several coats of Hardware store shellac, as it had a little pitch on the surface. The wood was dried to 8%. One year later, the exterior surface has really rough, nubby surface caused by pitch (?) migrating out. Why? What can be done?

Vern,
I think the reason why your question has sat for so long is that more information is needed.
What is the climate? Which way does the door face? Are you absolutely certain the finish is Shellac? Was the door stained?
FWIW, when used as a sealer, Shellac will "block" resins from migrating. IMO, Shellac as an exterior finish is not appropriate and will not withstand the rigors of constant exposure to the weather.

*Does anyone know what shelf life can be expected of lacquer? I just finished some baltic birch boxes (no stain) with some sherwin williams, water white nitrocellulose lacquer that had been stored for 3 years. The lacquer and its sanding sealer were tightly sealed and stored in heated shop. The humidity was very high the day the boxes were sprayed. used plenty of retarder thinner. The product performed great just like I remembered. The only problem is the smell. brought the boxes into the basement after they dried (sprayed outside)and they stunk up the whole house. put them out on the front porch and I could smell them coming in from work this evening. It's only been 36 crs but I don't remember an entire set of kitchen cabinets smelling this bad. hope my project isn't ruined. Any advice?
