To make a long story short, I want fnish some ziricote projects so I don’t lose the good contrast between the brown and black figure. I have tested everything I know including lacquer, various Minwax varnish products, Waterlox products, and Tung oil. The best I can do to preserve the look I want is Renaissance wax but I fear it is not durable enough. The current project is a wedding gift – a his and her box with two companion boxs at 66% scale. The companion wood is Ebony.
Any ideas????
Thanks in advance for any help.

You have used mostly oil based finish options it appears. They will all have very similar effect, differing mostly in detail. You might try shellac which wets out wood differently--in particular choose a super blonde or ultrablonde shellac from flakes.
The other option to try would be a waterborne finish, though many are so water clear that they offer very little life to the finish.
Lacquer
you might also try a water clear NC lacquer
