I used Hydrocote Resisthane for a Walnut kitchen counter top. I picked this because of the article in FW187 by Chris A. Minick. I rubbed on 7 coats with a rag then two coats with a brush after install the top. Now it seems water, if left on for a hour or so in a dropplet or on the bottom of a glass, seeps though and creates a circular mark from the glass or a little spot from the water drop. Cannot be used with this happening so will need something to put over the hydrocote to make it usable. What did i do wrong????

Using a waterborne finish for a counter top is not the best choice. Waterborne finishes are not as water and watervapor resistant as an oil based finish. I would expect the reaction from any waterborne acrylic finish.
I talked to Hydrocote and they indicated that Resisthane is not recommended for kitchen counter tops. I found the Minick article and the label on the Resisthane bit misleading. Both indicate Resisthane is water resistant when it is not. The Hydrocote Resisthane web site clearly indicates it is not water resistant but the can states "Resists maring, water and household cleaners" How did Minick test this for water when my counter produced marks everyplace water was left on the counter for more than a few minutes.
Hydocotes solution is to overcoat with Everlast varnish/polyurethane. They claim this is a replacement for Tung oil and completely seals against water on counter tops. I am going to try this and re post here when the results are in.
