I just finished stripping down my front door. I think the wood is a light oak which has suffered some water discoloration in spots. I would like to leave it in it’s natural state but enhance the door with some darker stain to hide the discoloration. Do I stain the door and varnish it? Or is there a varnish/stain that I can use? Or, should I use something else? Thank you. |

I am one of the less experienced members of Knots and usually I just lurk.
However, I have used combination varnish/stain on a couple of my projects. I didn't like it. Since the stain is mixed into the varnish, it is difficult to control the amount of color. I brushed it on and particularly had problems with too much color settling in detail areas.
I can't tell you what to use, but I would not recommend the combination stain/varnish finish. If I recall correctly, others on this forum have not been too pleased with the combination product either.
Take care,
Greg
