I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!
I am trying to finish some oak wood that goes in the bed of a 35 Ford Truck. I have seal the wood with Olympic wood sealer. Then I tried to put a glass like finish over the wood with Helmans Spar Urethane. I am on my second try but all I get is little spicks all over the wood. I sand between coats and wipe the wood down. I have tried both spray and brush but no luck. Please tell me what I am doing wrong? This going to be a show truck in Las Vegas.

Randy;
Sounds like your sealer has silicone in it. Most do. Can't really offer you a solution except maybe an epoxy finish, or you can get a fish eye fixer to mix with your finish.
Those little spicks as you call them are known as fish eyes and they are caused by silicone in a previous wax (most modern spray on furniture polishes have it). The fish eye flow out will make your finish flow over them.
If you want the glass finish, you have to fill the pores. You can buy "grain" filler at some of the better supply stores or you can use plaster of paris. You smear the stuff on, rub it in with your hands to force the paste right into the pores. Wait overnight and scrape it off and maybe sand very little. If you sand too much you will sand it out of the pores and you will have to start over again. After you clean it up, go ahead and apply the stain or finish. It should be glass smooth.

"Wait overnight" -- which grain filler do you use that indicates to wait overnight before scraping???? The two that I've used indicate to remove excess when the filler gets hazy. If the worker waited overnight it'd be pretty difficult to remove.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I'm guessing that's a deck type of wood sealer and not a woodworking type "filler" that F.G. was talking about. I think your pretty comitted to working with Olympic at this point. Call their office and ask what to do. I almost suggested a barrier coat of shellac, but outdoors I don't think so. You can always sand like crazy, and apply a better fit product.
