I’m nearing the completion of the cuts, banding, and drilling construction holes on my kitchen cabinet project, but I’m stuck as to how to finish it. Should I finish the cabinets before assembly or after the boxes are completed. Furthermore, what would be a durable finish on maple ply for a kitchen. I want to keep the wood as white as possible. Any suggestions?

I've done 2 sets of maple ply kitchen cabinets and used Bona Mega waterbased poly on both. 3,4,5 coats, can't remember.
In both cases, because the cases were to be glued, I assembled first and then finished. Assempled they take up less space.

those Bona products are floor finishes... you put 3-4 coats on cabinets? Isn't the finish kinda thick? FWIW, I find that it's hard to beat pre-cat lacquer for kitchen cabinets. Quick to apply and durable, not to mention easy to clean, my own kitchen cabinets are 5 years old now and they look almost as good as the day I installed them, minus a few dings and scratches.
Mine don't have dings yet. only 2.5 years old.
Bona Mega not too thick. I buildi up thin coats and sand between.
I've never used pre-cat laquer. Can I brush or must it be sprayed.
I am a spraying novice although I really want to try it.

"Mine don't have dings yet"I'll send my 4 year old over for a weekend... you'll have dings then. RE lacquer, yeah it's sprayed on. I've seen brush on lacquer from Deft but I have a spray setup so never tried it.
That's OK. My 2 year old granddaughter hangs around a lot.
I have a simple spray setup to use with my compressor which I have yet to try. Maybe when I finish the deck steps, the buffet unit for the dining room, the picture frames. And then comes ski season. Oh yes, the granddaughter will probably need a bed soon.
Have a great weekend, make some sawdust.

Give it a try. There are a couple of articles in recent FWW (well a couple of years old) about setting up the gun and spray technique, but I have to say that it's a simple process once you get the basics down.
What is a good source for pre-cat laquqer?

I have a local supplier of automotive finishes who carries some Maclac as well, but if I can wait a couple of days I'll call up Jeff @ Homestead Finishing.
Thank you.

I've been using EMTECH 8000 from Target Coatings on my last 2 clear finished maple kitchens. Good stuff. I wouldn't brush it though. I think it needs to be sprayed.

Target finishes are on my short list of preferred products. Very high quality and predictable results each time.
Will these poly coats leave a shine? I'd like it to be a flat as possible.
shoot gloss for all but the last coat, satin has a tendancy to wash out the details if you put on too many coats...
