Hello, I have this lacewood, platanus. Please take a look at this web site:

I cannot understand if it’s open or closed pore wood. Also, I want to finish it with nitro. Would you advice to stain it or not? If yes how? Do you have some ideas and/or suggestions to give me?
Thanks Enrico

I haven't work with it directly, but I'm pretty sure that the European lacewood (London plane) is closed pored, and shouldn't present particular finishing problems. Whether you stain it is very much a personal choice. You might want to experiment with whether a single coat of BLO pops or enhances the appearance of the figure to be worth the effort, and time for it to cure before topcoating. I don't have the experience to answer that question.

It is fine textured and diffuse porous Steve. Here are a couple of images of it finished with 50% sheen pre-catalysed lacquer.

The picture below is of Australian silky oak, which is not an oak at all really and, in contrast, is coarse textured. Again it's got 50% sheen pre-cat on it. Slainte.

Great photo's. Thanks.
Thanks Steve.
Re: the original question from esc, there is no dye, stain or other colourant on the samples I embedded in my previous post. The wood (veneer samples) were sanded to 180 grit on a panel sander and spray polished with the clear pre-cat.
The decision to stain, dye or otherwise colour bare wood prior to applying a finish depends on the required and/or desired end result in making the wood fit for the purpose it's intended for. You would really need to provide some information on these considerations I believe before you could elicit a properly considered response. Slainte.richardjonesfurniture.com
